Astronomers Olivier Hainaut and David Tholen investigated the photograph and traced it back to a genuine image taken by Tholen at the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy. Why the “Companion” Was Identified as a Background Star
The rumour did not begin with the altered University of Hawaii image. None of these appeared. Instead, astronomers repeatedly observed phenomena entirely consistent with a natural comet.
