Why Eyewitness Reports Stay Uncertain
One reason many sightings remain unresolved is the nature of the evidence itself. Witnesses often observe an unusual object briefly, under poor viewing conditions, at an unknown distance, and without supporting measurements. Human perception can be compelling but is not always reliable enough to reconstruct exactly what occurred.

Why Failed Promises Are Different
Failed UFO predictions operate under a different evidential standard. A prediction typically claims that a future event will occur: a spacecraft will appear, contact will be made, a disclosure deadline will arrive, or a civilisation will reveal itself at a specified time.
Unlike a sighting, such a claim does not depend primarily on the quality of sensor data. The crucial question is whether the predicted event occurred. If a prophecy announced a mass landing on a certain date and no such event took place, the prediction has failed regardless of how many unresolved UAP reports exist elsewhere.
This difference explains why unresolved sightings cannot rescue failed predictions. NASA’s findings about incomplete evidence concern the interpretation of observations. A failed prediction concerns a promised outcome that never materialised. The evidential problem is therefore much simpler. The issue is not whether observers lacked sufficient data; it is whether the forecasted event happened at all.
In practice, UFO prediction movements often respond to missed deadlines by revising dates, redefining what was expected, or arguing that the event occurred invisibly. Those responses differ fundamentally from scientific uncertainty about a sighting. A sighting can remain unresolved because evidence is lacking. A prediction fails because the promised occurrence does not match observable reality.
Unidentified Is Not the Same as Predicted
NASA’s UAP work provides a useful framework for separating two questions that are often blurred together.
The first question is whether an observation can be identified. The second question is whether a specific UFO prediction came true. That question is usually far easier to evaluate. If a predicted landing, revelation, or extraterrestrial intervention did not occur when promised, the prediction failed regardless of any unresolved sightings elsewhere.
